About Exams

Midterm exams will be given in the testing center. They will be available for the days and times listed in the course syllabus.

The exams are not timed. You may take as much time as you like.

The exams are closed book. However, you will be provided with a copy of "Chapter Summaries of Mathematical Relations" from the course packet for the chapters covered by the exam.

You will be provided with an answer sheet. Write all of your answers on this sheet. Do not write on the exam, since it will be reused by other students. Do not write on the cover sheet provided by the testing center, since it will not be returned to you.

Some problems will be similar to homework problems and will require a numerical answer. Bring a calculator. (All types of calculators are allowed, but PDAs and laptops are not allowed.) Bring your own paper. Work out the solutions to these problems on this paper.

Solutions should be presented so that I can easily follow your work and understand what you did. Cross out any work which you don't want me to consider when I grade your exam. Give units in your answers. Give the correct number of significant figures in your answers. A good review on significant figures is given in Chapter 1 in the textbook. Take the self-test on significant figures.

Check that your answers are reasonable. If you give an unreasonable answer, you may lose extra points, even if the mistake was a simple math error or calculator error. If you know that an answer is unreasonable, but you can't find your mistake, indicate that on your solution. That will save you from losing extra points.

Some questions on the exam will be conceptual, similar to the material we discussed in class. These will include multiple-choice questions, graphs, short answers, etc.
